In a typical outsourcing scenario, a company would outsource tasks which it considers as secondary or which takes away a lot of time and holds it from focusing on its core activities. This concept of outsourcing will remain however, the industry is maturing to get the bigger pie which is primarily knowledge driven. For instance, you will find social media analysis, new sales channel 'enablement', bringing in leaner and efficient process with IT integration, these are the ways how most outsourcing projects are going to be handled.
Krishnan Chatterjee, head of global strategy and marketing at HCL Technologies, during an interview made an interesting point, "The question that customers are now asking is, 'Are you willing to blend multiple services into an integrated offering, so we can talk as business partners, rather than you giving me 10 bodies who will churn out x lines of code at the cheapest rate."
I remember seeing a Wipro case study in which the social media analytic team helped find out the source of the issue by their social media monitoring tools and this helped them nail down and also plan a action based on the findings.
This means outsourcing contracts will cost more to the clients but then there won't be complains because they will be interesting in paying if those services aren't just about "keeping the lights on," but help deliver an advantage over competitors. "When differentiation comes into play, the conversation is no longer about who is cheapest and who has the most bodies," Chatterjee from HCL added.
However, the biggest challenge we have is our inability to find the best talent for specific tasks and Indian companies like Infosys, Wipro, TCS should increasingly dedicate time and energy to map the talent to the right jobs.
